Global Environmental Conference Held via Videoconferencing

On March 5, 2009, Sharp's Environmental Protection Group hosted its Global Environmental Conference for environmental representatives from Sharp bases in Japan and overseas. The meeting has been held annually since 2000 to decide on key elements of Sharp's environmental policy, strategy, and targets.
Up until last year, environmental representatives from the Americas, Europe, China, and Asia traveled to Japan for the conference. However, to make it worthy of the label "environmental," this year's event was held as a videoconference using Sharp information displays, thus cutting the CO2 emissions that would have resulted from transporting everyone to Japan.
In fact, this year's conference generated less than 1/1,000th the total CO2* that would have been emitted had the participants from Japan and abroad used transportation to attend the meeting. The reduction is equal approximately to 80,000 t-CO2.

* Basis for calculating CO2 emission reductions resulting from the use of videoconferencing:
The conference connected seven Sharp bases in Japan (excluding those in Osaka) and three bases overseas via a videoconference system. If the participants were to travel from their respective bases in Japan and abroad to the meeting, CO2 emissions would be approximately 7,923 kg-CO2. CO2 emissions using the videoconference system are assumed to be approximately 7 kg-CO2. Therefore, the reduction in emissions is approximately 7,916 kg-CO2.
